Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you want common species documented?
A: Yes! One of the goals of Wisconsin NatureMapping is to "keep common organisms common." It is just as important to track the critters we see every day (deer, squirrels, etc.) as it is to track the critters we see only rarely.

Q: How often should I enter my observations?
A: The data is assessed on a monthly basis, so try to enter your observations before the last day of each month.

Q: What if I see the same animal in my backyard every day? (ex. a cardinal nesting in my tree or a deer that visits every evening)
A: If you see the same animal every day in the same place, you may choose to enter an observation of that animal once each day or only once a week. Enter your observations as often as you would like! Please do not, however, enter observations of the same animal several times a day, unless the sighting us unusual or you are conducting a specific study on the organism. For example, if you see an owl in your yard early in the morning before the sun comes up and then you see the same owl in the middle of the day, you might find that interesting and want to record both observations.
